Ultimate Spider-Man (2024): where to start
Marvel’s 2024 Ultimate Spider-Man is a fresh start by Jonathan Hickman and Marco Checchetto with a married Peter Parker. Here is the order.
What is it?
Ultimate Spider-Man is a Marvel series written by Jonathan Hickman with art by Marco Checchetto. Its first issue came out on 10 January 2024, and it was the first ongoing series set in Marvel’s new Ultimate Universe. In this version, Peter Parker is older and already married to Mary Jane Watson, with children. He becomes Spider-Man after learning the truth about his world.
It shares a name with the Ultimate Marvel line of 2000 to 2015, but it is not a reboot of that line. The Ultimate Universe of 2023 is a new set of takes on Marvel characters, set up by the limited series Ultimate Invasion by Hickman and Bryan Hitch. The imprint has since wrapped up, but the Spider-Man books are collected and in print.

Do I need to read anything first?
Our advice: no. Volume 1 tells Peter’s story from the start. Ultimate Invasion is the limited series that set up the Ultimate Universe, and it is optional background. A fourth volume, One Last Day, is listed by retailers as collecting issues #19 to 24 and a finale story, so check Marvel’s page for the full run.
Other Spider-Man places to start
The 2000 Ultimate Spider-Man by Brian Michael Bendis and Mark Bagley is a separate story and a popular classic start. For more starting points, see our best Spider-Man comics guide. This series is rated for teen readers and above in our catalog.

Questions people ask
What is Ultimate Spider-Man (2024)?
It is a Marvel series by writer Jonathan Hickman and artist Marco Checchetto that began on 10 January 2024. It was the first ongoing series in Marvel’s new Ultimate Universe. This Peter Parker is older and already married to Mary Jane Watson with children, and he becomes Spider-Man after he learns the truth about his world.
What order do I read Ultimate Spider-Man (2024) in?
Read the collected volumes by number: Vol. 1: Married with Children, which collects issues #1 to 6, Vol. 2: The Paper, with #7 to 12, and Vol. 3: Family Business, with #13 to 18. A fourth volume, One Last Day, is listed by retailers. Our checklist lists the first three and remembers your progress.
Do I need to read Ultimate Invasion first?
We think not. Ultimate Invasion is the limited series by Jonathan Hickman and Bryan Hitch that set up the Ultimate Universe, and it is useful background, but volume 1 of Ultimate Spider-Man tells Peter’s story from the beginning. Read Ultimate Invasion afterwards if you want to know how this world began.
Is it the same as the old Ultimate Spider-Man?
No. The 2000 to 2015 Ultimate Marvel line, with Ultimate Spider-Man by Brian Michael Bendis and Mark Bagley, is a separate story with a teenage Peter Parker. The 2023 Ultimate Universe is a new set of takes on Marvel characters, not a continuation. You can read either one without the other.
Is the Ultimate Universe over?
Wikipedia lists the Ultimate Universe imprint as running from June 2023 to June 2026, and sources differ on the exact month it ended. The Spider-Man books are collected and in print, so you can read the story as a finished run. Check Marvel’s page for the latest collected editions and any new releases.
Is Ultimate Spider-Man (2024) for kids?
It is a superhero comic with fighting and villains, and we place it in our teen band. Because it features a married Peter Parker with children, it is aimed at older readers. Look through a copy and check the publisher’s age rating on the listing before you buy for a younger reader.
