Bone: Out from Boneville
Jeff Smith
Three cousins get lost in a valley with a dragon, a Rat Creature and a farm girl.
Kazu Kibuishi’s Amulet is a complete nine-book fantasy series. Here is the order, a checklist, and what to know before a younger reader starts.
Amulet is a fantasy graphic novel series written and drawn by Kazu Kibuishi and published by Scholastic’s Graphix imprint. It starts with a family moving into an old house after a loss and a sibling pair pulled into a dangerous underground world. It has a big cast, a long story and a lot of monsters.
Nine books make up the series, and it is complete: The Stonekeeper, The Stonekeeper’s Curse, The Cloud Searchers, The Last Council, Prince of the Elves, Escape from Lucien, Firelight, Supernova and Waverider. Read them in order, because the story carries over from book to book. The checklist below keeps your place.
Retail listings give the first book as ages 8 or 9 and up, and we place the series in our ages 9 to 12 band. It is a dark fantasy: the first book includes a parent in danger, man-eating creatures and a tense night in a house. One parent’s review found it too frightening at age four and suggested seven or older. Read the first book together if your child is on the younger side.

There are nine Amulet books, and the series is complete: The Stonekeeper, The Stonekeeper’s Curse, The Cloud Searchers, The Last Council, Prince of the Elves, Escape from Lucien, Firelight, Supernova and Waverider. They are published in English by Scholastic’s Graphix imprint, and Kazu Kibuishi writes and draws all of them.
Read them in number order, from The Stonekeeper to Waverider. Some sources say you can dip in anywhere, but the story is continuous, with characters and events that carry over from book to book, so reading in order is the safer choice. Our checklist lists all nine and remembers which ones you have ticked.
Listings give the first book as ages 8 or 9 and up, and we place the series in our ages 9 to 12 band. The story deals with loss and danger, so a sensitive child may be happier a little older. Flip through the first book or read it together, then decide whether to go on.
It can be. The first book has a parent in danger, monsters, a creepy house at night and a rescue mission, and later books add war and loss. It is fantasy rather than horror, but a younger child may find parts frightening. Previewing the first book is a good idea if your reader is under nine.
Yes. Amulet is a complete nine-book series, and the ninth book, Waverider, is the last. That makes it a good pick for a reader who dislikes waiting between volumes: all of the story is already in print. Check Scholastic’s page if you want to confirm the current list and editions.
Try other fantasy adventures such as Bone, the Wings of Fire graphic novels or Mouse Guard. Each has a larger world to explore. The Comic Finder can narrow the list by age, style and genre, and lists the first book of each series so a long run does not crowd the page.
