Batman reading order
Batman has been in print since 1939, so the honest answer is a path, not a list. Here are twelve books to read, in a sensible order.
Batman first appeared in Detective Comics #27 in 1939, and he has been drawn and rewritten by hundreds of creators since. Because DC has also restarted its continuity more than once, there is no single sequence that covers the character. A good path picks complete stories that stand on their own.
The checklist below mixes classics with modern books. Batman: Year One and The Dark Knight Returns come from Frank Miller. The Long Halloween and Hush are mysteries that bring in many villains. Then come the Grant Morrison and Scott Snyder eras, and finally Absolute Batman, which is a separate universe and does not need the others.
Where to start
If you want the origin, begin with Batman: Year One. If you want a crime story with a large cast, begin with The Long Halloween. If you want the newest and most separate version, start with Absolute Batman Vol. 1: The Zoo, which launched on 9 October 2024 and needs no earlier reading.

Next up: Batman: Year One
Newest we list: Absolute Batman Vol. 3: Devil’s Workshop. A starting path, not a complete reading order. Absolute Batman is a separate universe.

You can stop after any book. Each one is a finished story, and you do not have to read the whole list to enjoy the character.
Several books here are darker than the usual superhero fare, and a few are rated for adult readers in our catalog. For a longer discussion of where to begin, see our best Batman comics guide, and for the newest series see Absolute Batman: where to start.
Questions people ask
What order should I read Batman comics in?
There is no single order, because Batman has been published since 1939 across many series and restarts. We suggest a path of complete stories: Year One, The Dark Knight Returns, The Killing Joke, Arkham Asylum, The Long Halloween, Hush, Batman and Robin, The Black Mirror, The Court of Owls and Absolute Batman. You can stop or skip anywhere.
Which Batman comic should I read first?
Batman: Year One is a popular origin story by Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli, and The Long Halloween is a good mystery with many villains. If you want a clean start with no history needed, try Absolute Batman Vol. 1: The Zoo. All three are complete enough to stand alone.
Do I need to read Batman in order?
Not really. Most of the books on our list are self-contained stories written to be picked up cold. A few, such as the Court of Owls and Absolute Batman volumes, continue in later books, so read those in number order. Otherwise follow your own taste and skip anything that does not interest you.
Is Absolute Batman part of the main Batman story?
No. Absolute Batman, by Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta, launched on 9 October 2024 as part of DC’s separate Absolute Universe. It does not connect to the main Batman books, so you can read it without any earlier Batman reading, or ignore it and follow the other books on this page.
Are Batman comics suitable for kids?
Some are, but many on this page are not. The Killing Joke and Arkham Asylum are rated for adults in our catalog, and most of the rest suit teens. If you are choosing for a child, look through a copy first and check the publisher’s age rating. Our kids hub lists series made for younger readers.
What should I read after Year One?
The Long Halloween is a natural next step, since it continues the early-career feel with a mystery. After that, Hush is a big-cast adventure, and Scott Snyder’s Court of Owls starts a modern run. Our checklist lists all three in order and remembers which ones you have ticked.
