Where to sell comic books
The right place to sell depends on what you have. Here are the main options, what each suits, and how to prepare your comics first.
There is no single best place to sell comics. A box of common issues, a few graded keys and one rare book all call for different sellers. Start by working out which group you are in. Our value checker can help you sort them.
We are not affiliated with any seller named here, and fees and rules change, so read each seller’s current terms before you commit. We show no prices on this site.
The main options
| Option | Best for | The trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Local comic shop | A quick, simple sale of a box or a collection | Shops need to resell at a profit, so payouts are usually lower. |
| eBay | Single issues and mid-range books, raw or graded | You do the listing, photos and shipping, and the audience is large but mixed. |
| Facebook and online collector groups | Selling directly to fans of a character or era | Less buyer protection and a smaller audience; go carefully. |
| Comic-specific auction sites (ComicConnect, ComicLink) | Valuable graded books | You consign and wait for the auction to end. |
| Large auction houses (Heritage) | High-value books | Slower, with seller and buyer charges, and mostly for expensive books. |
| Conventions and comic shows | Selling to dealers who can look at the book in person | You pay for a table or travel, and dealers will negotiate. |
Before you sell
- Identify each issue: title, issue number, publisher, year and any variant or reprint marking. Our key issues page lists the books collectors watch for.
- Check sold listings, not asking prices: what buyers actually paid is the best guide. Database sites such as GoCollect and CovrPrice help.
- Judge condition honestly: see the CGC grading scale for a shared vocabulary, and photograph flaws.
- Pack it well: a bag and board per comic, stiff boards in the mailer. Search Amazon for bags and boards.
- Do not clean or repair: restoration can lower what buyers will pay.
Selling a whole collection? Sort out the few books that are worth selling singly, and sell the rest as lots or to a shop.
Questions people ask
Where is the best place to sell comic books?
It depends on what you have. A local comic shop is quick for a box of common issues, eBay suits single issues and mid-range books, and comic-specific auction sites or Heritage suit valuable graded books. Collector groups can work for specific characters. Check sold listings first, so you know roughly what your issue is worth.
Is it better to sell comics on eBay or to a comic shop?
eBay usually reaches more buyers, but you do the photos, listing and shipping. A comic shop is faster and simpler, but shops must resell at a profit, so payouts are usually lower. For a quick, no-effort sale choose the shop. For a better price on a single valuable issue, try eBay or an auction.
Should I get my comics graded before selling?
Only if they are both valuable and in good condition. Grading takes time and costs money, so it makes less sense for common or worn copies. Use a value checker, look at sold listings for graded and raw copies of your issue, and decide whether the likely gain is worth the effort. Our CGC scale page explains the grades.
How do I find out what my comic is worth?
Identify the exact issue, publisher, year and condition, then look up recent sold listings for matching copies. Price guides such as Overstreet give a baseline, and sites like GoCollect and CovrPrice show recent sales. Asking prices are unreliable, because the final price is what a buyer paid. This site shows no prices.
How should I ship comics when I sell them?
Put each comic in a bag with a backing board, then sandwich the stack between stiff boards or cardboard in a sturdy mailer. Mark the package clearly and use tracking. Photograph the packed comic. Good packing prevents damage in transit, and damaged comics lead to refunds and disputes.
Can I sell a whole collection at once?
Yes, and some sellers prefer it. A comic shop or dealer may buy the whole lot, but usually pays less per book. A common approach is to pull out the few valuable issues and sell them separately, then sell the rest as lots or to a shop. Our value checker can help you sort the books first.
