Best manhwa to start with

Manhwa is Korean comics. A growing number of series have English print volumes. These are the ones in our catalog.

Manhwa is the Korean word for comics. Many popular series began as webtoons, comics made for scrolling on a phone, and a number of them now have English print editions. Unlike manga, English manhwa is usually read from left to right, like a Western comic.

Print availability changes, so we only list titles that we have found as English print editions: Solo Leveling, Tower of God, Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint, The Remarried Empress and Villains Are Destined to Die. They cover action, fantasy and romance. All five are in our teen band, so check the content before buying for a younger reader.

How to pick one

  • Want action and levels? Solo Leveling follows a weak hunter who gets a second chance to level up.

Questions people ask

What is manhwa?

Manhwa is the Korean word for comics. Many series began as webtoons, which are made to be read by scrolling on a phone, usually in full color. A growing number have been collected into English print volumes. In English print, manhwa is normally read left to right, like Western comics, unlike manga.

Can I buy manhwa in print in English?

Yes. Solo Leveling, Tower of God, Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint, The Remarried Empress and Villains Are Destined to Die are all available as English print volumes, from different publishers. Not every series is printed in English, so check a bookseller’s listing for the print edition before you buy.

Is the webtoon the same story as the printed manhwa?

Usually the story is the same, but print editions gather the chapters into volumes and may differ in format or color. Because the webtoon format is vertical scroll, the layout of a printed volume is rearranged to suit a page. Check the listing, and a few preview pages, for what the print edition looks like.

What manhwa should I read first?

Solo Leveling is a good action pick, Tower of God suits fans of long fantasy, and Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint is a good choice if you like stories about stories. The Remarried Empress and Villains Are Destined to Die suit romance fantasy fans. Start with volume 1 and buy more if you enjoy it.

Is manhwa suitable for kids?

The manhwa we list are in our teen band, so check each book’s age rating and description before buying for a younger reader. Some contain fighting and darker themes. Publishers print a rating on the cover or product page, and a look through a few pages tells you more than a label does.
