One Piece, Vol. 1
Eiichiro Oda
A straw-hatted boy sets out to become Pirate King.
Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece is long, so the easiest way to follow it is by box set. Here is the order and a checklist.
One Piece is a manga by Eiichiro Oda about a young pirate, Monkey D. Luffy, and his crew. In English it is published by Viz. The only rule for reading order is the volume number: start with Volume 1 and go up. It is a long series, so most readers buy it in boxes.
Viz has released four box sets covering volumes 1 to 90. Box Set 1 holds volumes 1 to 23 (the East Blue and Baroque Works stories), Box Set 2 holds 24 to 46, Box Set 3 holds 47 to 70 and Box Set 4 holds 71 to 90. Listings describe the story arcs inside each set a little differently, so rely on the volume numbers. For volumes after 90, check Viz’s listings.
Like all manga, One Piece reads from right to left. If that is new, our how to read manga page has an animated diagram.
Not sure you will like it? Buy Volume 1 alone first. If you want to keep going, a box set usually saves you from buying twenty volumes one at a time.

Read it by volume number, starting with Volume 1. The story is continuous, so each volume builds on the last. Viz’s box sets make this easier: Box Set 1 holds volumes 1 to 23, Box Set 2 holds 24 to 46, Box Set 3 holds 47 to 70 and Box Set 4 holds 71 to 90.
In English, Viz’s four box sets cover volumes 1 to 90: Box Set 1 has volumes 1 to 23, Box Set 2 has 24 to 46, Box Set 3 has 47 to 70 and Box Set 4 has 71 to 90. Listings name the story arcs slightly differently, so check the volume numbers on the product page.
Single volumes let you try the series cheaply, while box sets bundle many volumes in one slipcase and are convenient if you are sure you will keep reading. We do not show prices, so compare a box set with the individual volumes on Amazon on the day you buy. Start with Volume 1 if you are unsure.
Right to left, like all manga. Open the book from what Western readers call the back, start at the top-right panel and move left. Speech bubbles follow the same path. Our how-to-read-manga page has a short animated diagram that shows the path if the layout feels strange at first.
We place One Piece in our teen band. It has cartoon fighting, danger and some dark moments, but it is generally lighter than many action manga. Publishers give their own age ratings on each volume, and children differ, so check the listing and look through a copy before buying for a younger reader.
We cannot confirm that it has ended. The English box sets stop at volume 90, and later volumes exist beyond them. Check Viz’s One Piece page for the newest volume number and for any news about the ending before you plan how far to go.
