Sandman reading order
Neil Gaiman’s Sandman is ten collected volumes, with a prequel and a book of extra stories. Here is the order and a checklist.
The Sandman is a fantasy series by Neil Gaiman about Dream, one of seven siblings called the Endless. It ran for 75 issues, with covers by Dave McKean, and is collected in ten volumes: Preludes & Nocturnes, The Doll’s House, Dream Country, Season of Mists, A Game of You, Fables & Reflections, Brief Lives, Worlds’ End, The Kindly Ones and The Wake.
Read the volumes in that order. One quirk: Fables & Reflections is sixth in the set, but it gathers some issues that were published earlier, so the collected order is not exactly the order the issues first came out. The volume order is the intended way to read the story.
Overture and Endless Nights
The Sandman: Overture is a six-issue prequel by Gaiman and artist J. H. Williams III, published from 2013 to 2015. It assumes you know the characters, so most readers save it for after the main run. The Sandman: Endless Nights, from 2003, is a book of separate stories about each of the Endless, drawn by different artists, and also works well after the ten volumes.
The Sandman is written for adult readers, with horror, violence and mature themes. It is not a series for children.

Questions people ask
What order should I read The Sandman in?
Read the ten collected volumes in number order: Preludes & Nocturnes, The Doll’s House, Dream Country, Season of Mists, A Game of You, Fables & Reflections, Brief Lives, Worlds’ End, The Kindly Ones and The Wake. Then, if you want more, read Overture and Endless Nights. Our checklist lists all twelve and remembers your place.
How many Sandman books are there?
The main series is ten collected volumes covering 75 issues. Gaiman also wrote The Sandman: Overture, a six-issue prequel published from 2013 to 2015, and The Sandman: Endless Nights, a 2003 book of separate stories. There are other spin-offs and different editions, such as omnibus volumes, that regroup the same material.
Should I read Overture first?
No. Overture is a prequel, but it assumes you already know the characters, so most readers leave it until after the ten main volumes. Reading it first can spoil or confuse parts of the story. Start with Preludes & Nocturnes and come back to Overture at the end.
Is The Sandman suitable for kids?
No. The Sandman is written for adults and includes horror, violence and mature themes, and we place it in our adult band. If you want fantasy for younger readers, our kids hub lists series such as Amulet and Wings of Fire. Check the publisher’s age rating before giving any Sandman book to a teenager.
Who wrote and drew The Sandman?
Neil Gaiman wrote it, and several artists drew different stories, including Sam Kieth and Mike Dringenberg on the first volume. Dave McKean made the covers for the whole run. DC Comics published it, later under its Vertigo imprint. Overture, the prequel, was drawn by J. H. Williams III.
Why is Fables & Reflections out of issue order?
The sixth volume, Fables & Reflections, collects stand-alone stories that were published in between the other story arcs, including issues numbered 29 to 31 and 38 to 40. They fall between the arcs of other volumes in the issue run. Following the collected volume numbers is the usual way to read the series.
